Paranormal Love Wednesdays: Within the Mist #RomFantasy

Just released: Inspired by the music of Riccardo Foresi, the photography of Vincenzo Chiofalo, and the eternal lure of Gaston LeRoux’s The Phantom of the Opera… discover what waits Within The Mist…

WITHIN THE MIST

The evening air of a Winter in Venice cloaks many things… Passion, destiny, sorrow… Perhaps even the spectre of death waits within the mist…

The misty evening air of a Winter in Venice cloaks many things…. Some who are passionate lovers hoping for stolen moments….. others who are merely the cutthroats and thieves that plague any city filled with the wealth of visitors and citizens of palaces….. But what else lies hidden within the mist? The voice of an angel lures…. each perfect note beckons and promises untold pleasures…. until, finally, a broken heart succumbs to desire…. and Fate weaves a new thread into the tapestry that is the mystery of life itself….

Excerpt:

She gasped in fright and pain as he slashed the dagger’s edge across her palm and brought the bleeding hand to his mouth. When his tongue played over her flesh she felt the mists of the night invade her brain, and blackness reached out to pull her into a chasm that exploded into fire racing along her veins… As the world changed around her and within her, she heard his sweet voice whispering to her…

There is always life in death, amore mio… when I am death… come with me, share our journey…

“Yes…”

She heard the word, distant, torn from her soul purely by the power and depth of her need to know him, to know all of him, at whatever price he asked. The ache in her body pulled at her, made her feel light and heavy with conflicting desires.

The dagger flashed again, slowly, gently slicing through the tie that held her cape together at her throat. It slid away and he smiled with satisfaction when he saw the crimson silk she wore, a simple dress that wrapped around her like the arms of a lover… She had been wearing this pretty gown the night they’d first seen each other, choosing it had seem right somehow.

The gleaming stiletto blade moved once more, and candlelight flickered against the shining silver as he delicately cut the tie that held the dress up. He set the knife on the piano and with the backs of his hands barely touching her skin, he smoothed the shape of her collarbones, then retraced them with the sensitive pads of his fingertips. The calluses from hours spent playing the piano added another sensual layer to the rippling sensation that was fanning outward, running though her veins like blood...

Excerpt:

He continued to sing, the lyrical, lilting Italian words caressing her spirit and pulling her closer to him. When she finally stepped into the chamber where he was, she stared in wonder. The room was lit with what appeared to be a thousand candles, their soft glow reflecting off the polished wooden floor and throwing frenetic shadows everywhere. Seated at the piano was a slender man, dressed all in black. His hair was dark, and the hands that whispered over the keys of the instrument were long-fingered and elegant. Hands shaped for making love in any form he chose.

He played the last notes of the mesmerizing song and slowly turned to look at her. His dark eyes glittered, flames dancing wildly in their ebony depths, and he held out his hand to draw her forward. She went to him and dropped to her knees, head bowed, tears streaking her face as she let the hood of her cape fall to hide her shame.

“You came to end my life. Why?”

“I cannot bear the pain of not knowing you.”

“But you do know me. I am part of you.”

“You are madness!” She retorted with real anger surging into her being, giving her strength and making her look up at him. “You have taken everything!”

“I took nothing,” he admonished with gentle warmth. “I am part of you.”

“How can that be?”

He smiled. She felt the kiss of his indulgence touch her heart.

“You created me,” he murmured. “The night he died, you gave me life.”

She was confused, and the room was suddenly growing colder with each beat of her heart.

“Why did you let me find you?”

He tilted his head to one side and considered her question.

“Perhaps because it is time for me to return the gift of life to you, tesoro mio?”

“You can’t,” she whispered, the quiet words shaken and harsh. “There is no life for me now.”

“There is always life in death, amore,” he murmured as he leaned closer and pried the blade from her hand beneath the heavy cloak. “Let me show you forever.”

@GoddessFish presents Hearts on Fire @Alleyfics

This post is part of a virtual book tour revealing the cover of Alison Packard's newest book Hearts on Fire which will be released on February 3. One randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter will receive a $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Country music star Jessie Grant has it all. An amazing voice, a string of multi-platinum albums, and a sold-out concert tour. But just before her Hearts on Fire tour rolls into Las Vegas, her lead guitarist is badly injured and is unable to play. Desperate to find a replacement before the night of a televised live show, Jessie is forced to accept help from the last person on earth she wants to see again.

Drew Carmichael has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the best up-and-coming musicians in Nashville, without cashing in on his renowned father’s name. When Jessie’s manager calls and asks him to fill in for her band’s injured guitar player, he agrees to help Jessie out even though she cut him out of her life four months ago.

In Sin City, sparks fly between Jessie and Drew, and it isn’t long before they give in to their mutual attraction. But when the dark past Jessie has successfully hidden for ten years explodes in the media, their tenuous bond is put to the test, and both Jessie and Drew must learn to trust each other if they don’t want their newfound romantic relationship to go up in flames.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Jessie Grant stared at the cheery yellow wall in her dressing room, and fought the overwhelming urge to throw something. Anything. Her agitated gaze fell on the lovely vase of flowers that had been delivered just before the show, and she had to remind herself that violence, especially towards a perfectly innocent bouquet of pink roses and white calla lilies, wouldn’t solve anything.

But then again, it might relieve the tension that was coiled inside of her like a tightly wound spring.

“Calm down.”

“Calm down?” Jessie whirled around and met the exasperated eyes of her manager. “You expect me to calm down when my guitar player, who, unbeknownst to me, was half-wasted during our set, and decided to stage dive into the audience.” She pointed a finger at him. “That broken arm of his isn’t gonna to heal in four days. I need another guitar player, and I need one now.”

“Relax,” Wally Lindell said in a soothing voice. “I’m working on it.”

“How are you working on it?”

She propped her hands on her hips and gave him her best glacial stare. It didn’t faze him. It never did. He’d been her manager since she was fifteen years old, and he knew her better than anyone. So he should have known that she would be totally freaked out about losing her lead guitar player four days before her exclusive gig in Las Vegas, after all, he was the one who had dubbed her a perfectionist.

“I put in a call to Drew.”

Jessie’s already churning stomach lurched wildly. “Drew Carmichael?”

“How many other guitar players named Drew do you know?” Wally shot her a wise-ass grin.

Only one.

“So you talked to him?” she asked, as she moved to the make-up table. She picked up the bottle of water her stylist had left out for her and took a sip. Maybe the simple task would soothe her frayed nerves.

It didn’t even come close.

“What did he say?”

“I left him a message. He hasn’t called me back yet.” Wally shoved his hands into the front pockets of his black jeans and looked her straight in the eyes with an unflinching directness.

She’d seen that look before; the one telling her that while she might be the star, he was the one who’d gotten her there, and before she went off half-cocked, she’d better let him have his say. And of course, she would. She respected Wally far too much not to listen to him.

“He’s the only guitar player we can get on such short notice that knows your set list,” he continued. “I don’t know what happened between the two of you, but whatever it is, you need to put it aside for the sake of this gig, and maybe the rest of the tour.”

“What makes you think something happened?” she asked with feigned nonchalance.

It was best not to let anyone, especially Wally, know how much she cared about Drew.

“Because you two were as thick as thieves last spring, and now it’s like he’s dropped off the face of the earth. Did you have a falling out?”

“No.” Jessie scowled, as she returned the bottle to the table. “We didn’t have a falling out. I’ve been on the road for months now and he…he’s got a life.”

A life that didn’t include her.

Romance and a Mystery Giveaway! #RomFantasy

As the evolution of romance continues, its eternal appeal mutates and changes with the attitudes of society. It’s a bit like culture shock to see how the very definition of romance has changed during the past ten years. Like all emotion-based needs, the hunger for something that satisfies your desires is almost a living thing within you, and perhaps that more than anything else explains why romances remain the biggest selling genre in the publishing world.

For me, one of the more interesting constants is the on-going love affair with love stories is the never-changing ideal of romance. The hero is often the prime focus of most stories, and it’s been observed that a great hero can save almost any tale. If readers fall in love with the hero, the book is a success on an integral level.

The perennial favourite hero is the Alpha-male, and he is a staple in virtually any subgenre of romance you care to mention. The man who is strong, forceful, secure in himself, borderline arrogant in that not so nice way, but always a man of action in some fashion. He is masculine in the most basic and base ways. BUT, he’s never a total asshole. If you send him too far in that direction, no one will love him, least of all your heroine, and no matter how good your story might be, it’ll fall flat for the romance reader who can’t understand how any sane woman would want such a man.

The flip side of the coin in traditional romance is the heroine, who tends to be the feminine  complement to the Alpha hero. She is secure in her own skin, smart, honest even when she keeps secrets. (A trait your hero better have, too, of course.) She is not afraid to be female, or to admit if she needs the hero. She embraces her weaknesses as well as her strengths, and she enjoys being herself. If you don’t allow the heroine to be as three dimensional as your hero, your story will be very unbalanced, even if it is the male character who ultimately makes the story appealing to most readers.

Romance is a wonderful way to explore basic human nature, it’s one of the bonds that unites us as the human race, and love is an emotion virtually all living beings can understand. Through romance stories, many people are able to escape the stresses of their daily lives, experience places and situations that are out of their reach in real terms. We laugh, we cry, we hope and thrill to the joy of falling in love… all of these emotional responses are evoked from the words of a good writer who crafts with skill and care.

I’m a traditionalist in many ways when it comes to the stories I want to read. Time has become a precious commodity to most of us, and when it comes to my pleasure reading, I want to know what I’m about to invest those precious hours in. I often try new writers, but nine times out of ten, I never get past a few chapters before I pick up a book by someone I know will tell me a story I want to submerge myself in for a few hours. We have a market flooded with every kind of story imaginable. A lot of them I’d never call romance, but that’s just my opinion, we all define creative art in our own terms.

What is it you, the reader, looks for and craves in a romance? Do you stay with the authors who write the stories you know you’ll love, or do you explore new talents all the time? And, what does define romance for you, I know it’s different for all of us, of course.

If you leave a comment, I’ll choose someone to award a romance themed prize to in about a week.

Goddess Fish presents: A Grave Inheritance

A Grave Inheritance
by Kari Edgren

Selah Kilbrid may descend from the goddess Brigid, but her heart beats—and breaks—the same as any human. Yet enduring the scorn of London's most noble lords and ladies is a small price to pay for a chance at true happiness. Selah would endure much more for love, and her betrothed, Lord Henry Fitzalan, is prepared to challenge anyone foolish enough to stand in their way—even another goddess born.

But when a captivating young gentleman draws Selah into a world shadowed by secrets, she is forced to confront her darkest fears. What if some differences are too great to overcome and a future with Henry is doomed from the start?

With these doubts threatening her impending marriage, a violent attack on an innocent child pushes Selah to the very edge of her power. She must find a way to cross into the Otherworld and regain her strength—or forfeit the streets of London to death and disease.

EXCERPT:

Deri stopped just out of reach. The threadbare shawl had slipped from one shoulder, and the loose end trailed in the mud behind her. “There yeh be Biddie girl,” she chirruped. “Did yeh like our skip along? Poor Deri had to creep like a tortoise for yeh to keep up.”

Poor Deri was a cold-blooded killer, and at that moment I wanted nothing more than to wrap the shawl around her scrawny neck till the pale skin turned dark as a plum. And I may have regardless of the inevitable burns if the girl weren’t so quick on her feet, and almost sure to escape.

“Can’t recall when I’ve had a pleasanter time,” I said, matching her tone in an attempt to buy more time. “Do you often skip through the rookeries? Or is tonight a special occasion?”

She shrugged and twisted a toe in the mud. “The folks in here is weak from need, and little Deri likes to play with the children.”

“Like you played with Jenny?”

A malignant grin curled on her mouth. “Aye, she be the most fun of all.”

Hatred twisted in my gut. So far as I cared, every last layer of skin could burn from my hands if it meant ridding the world of this devil. Leaning a bit closer, I waited for the opportunity to pounce. “You’ve a powerful gift. Why not go after the healthy and strong? Surely they would offer more sport for someone like you.”

“Oh, I’ve longed to get yeh, Biddie girl, to muddle yehr brain or give yeh the plague.” She made to snatch at me, only to withdraw her hand at the last moment. “But yeh know the rules—yeh get what yeh give between us. Ain’t no sense plucking a hair from yehr pretty head if it means losing one of me own.”

I moved back with a jerk. You get what you give… The meaning struck hard—to stop her heart would have stopped mine. Merciful heavens! A few more seconds and we both would have been dead.

Introducing Night's Companion author @CA_Knoble #RomFantasy

Author BIO: Although she has been writing her entire life, Cynthia has just recently, as she puts it "grew a pair" and decided to take the leap and finally share her work with others. She has several other titles, in varying genres, that will be published in the future. A graduate of culinary school, she is also the mother of two boys. She lives in southern Ontario, Canada with her sons, a dog and a cat.

Our Interview:

Has writing been something you always did, or was it a discovered talent that came to you at a later point?

I have always written, ever since I was a child. It has always been cathartic and relaxing and the only thing I longed to do and to share with others but I never believed my writing was good enough. My writing has always taken a back seat to work, then having a family and starting a career and was something that I rarely indulged in over my adult life. Three years ago I became too ill to work in my chosen profession, I’m a trained chef, and began to write again. I finally worked up the courage to show some of it to friends and family members and they have encouraged me to publish it.

Do you remember how it felt when you were offered that first contract? What emotions stand out in your memory?

I’m self-published on Amazon through their Kindle Direct Publishing. It is still my ambition to be published traditionally. It had always been my dream to walk into a bookstore and see a display of books with my name on them. Insofar as the self-publishing goes, I was extremely proud of myself for taking the chance and getting the book out there. Until recently I’ve never had the nerve to even show my writing to anyone so I am proud of how much I have accomplished in that time.

Is this a first book, part of a series, or the latest in a long line of many?

This book is not part of a series although I have developed quite an affinity for one of its characters, Kord. As he is a vampire, so much could be done with his character, especially his past, and that is something that was only briefly touched on in Night’s Companion as the novel really is the female protagonist’s story. I have thought about writing more about Kord and I have been asked to. I may do so in the future but for now the story is finished.

What is the oddest thing that’s happened to you since you chose to become a professional writer? Will it ever make it into a book, or is that a secret?

Ooooh! Am I a professional? Lol. I suppose time will tell.

Do you have your next book underway, or other titles in the planning stages?

I do have another book I’m currently writing, several in the planning stages, one awaiting revisions, a few finished ones from the past that I am debating the merits of, and a trilogy that is completely finished but I’m holding onto right now to see if I can get it published traditionally.

Do you have a favourite genre and why? Is it one you write in, read in, or both?

I love horror, I always have, and I read more horror than anything else although my tastes span many genres. The trilogy I mentioned is a horror whereas Night’s Companion is definitely erotica with a hint of horror. I love to write erotica and have at least a few more erotic titles up my sleeve.

What, to you, is the most exciting part of the writing process? Does it change from book to book or remain the same?

To me the most exciting part of the writing process is to see it come together, to see the idea take shape and fill in and, in some cases, completely change from what I originally planned. Sometimes I’m very surprised with the end product as it may not resemble the initial idea I had at all. Sometimes I only have a vague idea of where I’m headed with a story and I’m along for the ride to find out what is going to happen just as the reader will be when she reads it. The process does seem to change from book to book. The trilogy was an amazing experience: three full novels that seemed to just flow out of me, written in only eleven months. It almost seemed as if I channeled them, they came out so fully developed. With others it was a definite struggle to finish them. To me writing is a process that is quite fluid and very changeable.

If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose and why? What kind of book do you think would come from the collaboration?

What a great question although it is a hard one to answer! I would choose Stephen White and I think we would create a very sexy thriller.

Where can readers find you on the web?

WARNING: THIS BOOK IS INTENDED FOR ADULTS ONLY. IT CONTAINS GRAPHIC PORTRAYALS OF SEXUAL ACTS INCLUDING THOSE THAT MAY PROVE OFFENSIVE TO SENSITIVE READERS, INCLUDING ACTS OF DOMINANCE AND BONDAGE.

Blurb:

Kord is sexy, controlling and just too hot for Michelle to resist beginning a torrid sexual tryst with him, even if he is her new boarder. Mysterious, charming and more than capable of fulfilling every fantasy Michelle has ever had, she finds it easy to ignore the questions others raise about Kord’s odd behavior. When both of their violent pasts collide in their conjoined present, Michelle’s very life will hang in the balance as Kord struggles with a horrid choice: save Michelle or protect his true identity; lose his human lover or expose his true nature.

Excerpt:

He trailed his hand down her bare arm, raising gooseflesh on her as he did. His touch was gentle in spite of his rough hands, soothing even. He continued to stare into her eyes intently.

“You have beautiful eyes,” he said softly, “they are almost cobalt. It’s quite a fetching colour, really.”

Michelle found his diction strange once more, it sounded very old-fashioned, but she did not comment on it. She was too focused on the feeling of lust that he stirred in her. She was getting wet and she shifted uncomfortably. Kord raised an eyebrow momentarily and then leaned forward to take her wineglass from her hands and place it on the coffee table beside his abandoned glass. He then took both her hands in his and once more stared into her eyes. Again she was struck by how cold his hands were but they seemed to warm as they enveloped hers.

“I find you very attractive, Michelle. I would love to kiss you now, but I fear straining our relationship as landlady and tenant.”

Michelle smiled lewdly at him, her heart hammering.

“I’m not looking for a relationship,” she informed him.

He smiled at this, a real smile, and Michelle noticed his upper canines were extremely long. Now she understood his unwillingness to smile; his teeth were odd, almost like fangs. He closed his lips immediately as he realized she had seen his teeth and then squeezed her hands gently.

“Neither am I. I would, however, love to explore every inch of your body.”

Michelle could not ignore the throbbing between her legs. Kord was hot and she would not pass up the opportunity to sleep with him. She gave him her best coy look and he gently pulled one of her hands toward him and then placed it in his lap. She could feel his hardness, through his jeans and under her hand.

“That’s what you’ve already done to me,” he informed her.
